There is something about French music that just pulls you in with the elegant language sounding like liquid gold when sung. Octavio Mai are one of the latest French acts that have begun to set the music scene alight with their brand of orchestral electronic music captivating fans, not only in France, but also across the globe.
Octavio Mai deliver a sleek neo-noir mystery with “Yeux Turquoise,” or “Turquoise Eyes” for those who do not speak French – an approximately three and a half minutes luxurious wave of spectral vocal, silken electronica and keys that wraps around the listener in softly whisked creamy layers. The driving force behind the duo is by taking the classic and using it as a looking glass into the future. Both stellar musicians, Julliete and Johan, are classically trained, and this mastery of music fuses into every tone.
There’s such a rich lushness to every note that makes you feel hyperreal. The guitar is seductive, but the sweeping synthesizers are intoxicating and draw you deep into the grasp of the music. The track feels like a living creature, full of mysterious and surprises; it constantly grows and layers until you find yourself buried in “l’extase.”
The accompanying music video is high concept with gorgeous cinematography that will leave you breathless. It is the strange romance between Julliete and her lover, a creature born of black with turquoise eyes. There are underwater shots and beautiful segues and motifs of jellyfish and eyes and motorcycles. I walk away feeling confused and nourished.
Our French is very patchy, to say the least, but it does come across as a love song, expressed through the eyes, the smile and more, journeying through life waiting for moments of passion.
