Poison Arrow” is a single released and popularized by the band, ABC in 1982 and also included on their 1982 debut album, The Lexicon of Love. It reached #6 on the UK singles chart, #4 in Australia and also was their first entry on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, at #25 – with Karen Clayton provides the backing vocals.

One of the most popular new wave bands of the early ’80s, the British group ABC built upon the detached, synthesized R&B pop of David Bowie and Roxy Music, adding a self-conscious, campy sense of theatrics and style. Under the direction of vocalist Martin Fry, the group scored several catchy, synth-driven dance-pop hits in the early ’80s, including “Poison Arrow,” “Look of Love,” and “Be Near Me.”

The single was released in the UK on 5 February 1982 on 7″ and 12″, with the same mix appearing on both formats; however a subsequent U.S. 12″ remix (also known as the “Jazz Remix”) appears on several ABC compilations and as a bonus track on reissues of The Lexicon of Love.

An alternate, lounge music-styled version of this song, entitled “Theme From Mantrap,” was released as the B-side of “Poison Arrow” in the UK and The Look of Love in the U.S. The UK 12″ single additionally included an instrumental version of “Theme From Mantrap” under the title “Mantrap (The Lounge Sequence)”. Their UK hit “Tears Are Not Enough” was the U.S B-side of Poison Arrow.

In the music video, Martin Fry plays three roles — as a haughty upper-class opera patron, as a messenger boy at the opera, and as a bandleader at a 1960s-style swinging nightspot — and, in all three roles, unsuccessfully attempts to woo the leading lady, played by Lisa Vanderpump, later of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

ABC Poison Arrow [Lyrics]:

If I were to say to you, can you keep a secret
Would you know just what to do or where to keep it?
Then I say, “I love you”, foul the situation
Hey girl, I thought we were the right combination

Who broke my heart, you did, you did
Bow to the target, blame Cupid, Cupid
You think you’re smart, stupid, stupid

Shoot that poison arrow to my heart
Shoot that poison arrow
Shoot that poison arrow to my heart
Shoot that poison arrow

No rhythm in cymbals, no tempo in drums
Love on arrival, she comes when she comes
Right on the target but wide of the mark
What I thought was fire was only the spark

The sweetest melody is an unheard refrain
So lower your sights, yeah
But raise your aim, raise your aim

Who broke my heart, you did, you did
Bow to the target, blame Cupid, Cupid
You think you’re smart, stupid, stupid

Shoot that poison arrow to my heart
Shoot that poison arrow
Shoot that poison arrow to my heart
Shoot that poison arrow

I thought you loved me, but it seems you don’t care
I care enough to know I can never love you

Who broke my heart, you did, you did
Bow to the target, blame Cupid
You think you’re smart, that’s stupid
Right from the start when you knew we would part

Shoot that poison arrow to my heart
Shoot that poison arrow
Shoot that poison arrow to my heart, heart, heart
Shoot that poison arrow

Heart, shoot that poison arrow
Shoot that poison arrow
