≑ Murdah Loves John ≑
‘Murdah Loves John‘ is the second in a series of character albums to emerge from the mind of Idris Elba. Inspired by his time portraying TV detective John Luther, Elba presents a unique musical interpretation of the sinister themes and settings explored in the series.
The album is not only based around the character John Luther but also the vibe of London. In an interview, Elba explained how the album came about: “With “Murdah Loves John” I really wanted people to feel like if they put this album on and turned down the soundtrack, they could still watch the show. Similarly, still get the vibe of London, get the vibe of my character, and the characters involved”.
A dark journey of synth beats and sombre lyrics, title track, ‘Murdah Loves John’ thus creates a gloomy soundscape for Luther’s murder mysteries; a tribute to the detective and his wild life.
Fans of London garage will more likely gravitate to the title track. Threading shadow-boxin’ lyrics from UK Grime artist, Wretch 32 and smooth vocal runs from newcomer Tanika Bailey enhances the composition. The gritty urban flavour of the piano-led melange of echoey tones, sophisticated strings, and dramatic keys intensify with industrial builds!
Annie Mac premiered the grandiose track and described it as “widescreen.” Elba called it a Bond-esque theme song. But however you wish to define this track, you’ll have to agree; it has John Luther written all over it!
