Do you really have to come from such a small island nation to make music that is second to none outside those volcanic islands? Symphonic. Sacred. Anthemic. Solemn. Rock. Modest. Serious. Árstíðir are all that and much more on their track, ‘Things You Said’.
‘Things You Said‘ the first single from the Árstíðir album, ‘Hvel‘, offers a sound that is just as rich as the first track, yet completely different – a simple but beautiful melody that begins with guitar and vocals, but builds with a powerful level of intensity and crescendo strings that eventually take over the track.
The drums are the most surprising addition to the band’s usual instruments and they work well with the baritone guitar. Overall we love the dramatic music that perfectly underlines the bitterness of the lyrics.
This is anything but a positive description of the end of a relationship. The words are so strong, they cut like a knife and make the heartache palpable, the hurt and disappointment feel real.
Their beautiful vocals come across as naturally as those of the Icelanders. But these vocal harmonies from the Atlantic island are the result of an incredibly closed team effort. Each member uses their own unique voice and interesting instrumentation to build together into one cohesive unit.
The beauty of the human voice and musical harmony meet each other on ‘Things You Said’..
In the end the music rises one last time and then, without warning, it just comes to a sudden stop, just like the feelings of the song’s protagonist have ended.
The final note is so exquisite and potent, it’s left hanging and resonating – what we call real ‘goose bump’ material.
If you think Iceland is only Björk and Sigur Rós, listen to Árstíðir!
