Junking the Fatboy Slim name, Norman Cook re-emerged as the Brighton Port Authority. Debut single ‘Toe Jam‘ and its blissful balearic groove perfectly capture a summer festival atmosphere. Featuring both Dizzee Rascal and David Byrne, ‘Toe Jam‘ is a wonderful collision of sparkling musical talents.
Heard in seaside bars around the world, this brilliant mix of horn sections, ska rhythms and latino vibes come together to create a perfect beach party song. As soon as you hear it, you’ll be reminded of The Cat Empire and suddenly, a smile will appear on your face.
The backing track is simple, with a constant rhythmical drumbeat and a cheeky horn section. The vocals are courtesy of David Byrne (of Talking Heads fame) and sound fantastic, with just a muffled bass line accompanying him on the first verse.
Byrne’s voice gives the track quite a retro feel, but then the contrast of guest MC Dizzee Rascal hits you. Dizzee strides confidently out of his rhythmic comfort zone. He starts banging on about getting pissed and pulling girls in a sleazy club somewhere. It’s a great moment, both hilarious as well as surprising
Dizzee is a great addition to the track – you might find it slightly out of left field at first, but his voice blends in perfectly.
At the end of the day, it’s best to enjoy this novelty Afro-pop track for what it is; a fun, light, slightly ridiculous tune with a superb video!
