Where the mechanical meets the organic – the second track off of Tómas Jónsson album of the same name. ‘Upphaf‘ rolls effortlessly between our ears but at the same time, we find it difficult to accurately define his style. Though one may say it’s in line with the “ambient” sounds of Jónsson Icelandic compatriots, Sigur Rós and Nils Frahm.
Jónsson, at only 23 years old, surprisingly released his self-titled solo debut album of modern classical compositions in 2016.
Set with a spacious, hypnotic groove Jonsson music has a way of a sneaking in under your skin and wrapping your senses in a dream pop glow.
As with ‘Upphaf‘, a serene and atmospheric blend of relaxing synth washes over a sleepy, piano melody. A cosmic space filled with slow and floaty fragments of darkly romantic textures with a distinctive melancholic touch.
Ambient evolving soundscape enhanced by mysterious other-worldly electronica & layered textures envelope the progressive sounds. Ethereal pads of swirling wind efx build and evolve with spacey 70s analog synthesizer effects.
The Reykjavik-based artist, thus reveals ambient music as more than blurred spots of meaningless sounds. In this case, Jónsson’s fuses a concoction of neatly combined chords, skillfully developed motifs and melodies.
It’s pensive yet bold, and very beautiful.
